Soul Eater Episode 19 Review
While the only thing exceptional about Soul Eater is the animation, the story manages to slightly stay above the curve. Soul Eater 19 seems like that delicious burrito you thought you ate in a dream, and then woke up wishing you actually had eaten one.
Soul Eater 19 finally explains a number of things. In fact, the episode spends too much time explaining things. Part of what makes a battle exciting is the unending and high speed pace. Their constant explanations during Stein’s battle with Medusa, while brief, were annoying. It broke the rhythm of what would have been an epic fight scene.
Finding out the Grim Reaper had permanently fused with the land to seal away Asura (the Demon God) was just kind “wtf.” So the most powerful force on the “good” side is neutered by being unable to move. Bloody great.
Most of Soul Eater 19 was courses of action being followed. There were a few tidbits of interest, such as Medusa honestly “wanting” Stein. I’m given to understand that it is meant somewhat romantically, and somewhat possessively. This is one of the most fascinating couplings I have ever seen in an anime.
The other tidbit was that Spirit is not the only Deathscythe in the world. This isn’t too much of a surprise, but this is the first time they have either confirmed the existence of others.
Maka comes off as a childish twat in Soul Eater 19. Of the three she is acting most out of character here. Death has gotten over his obsession with symmetry in face of greater evil. Even Black Star has realized the gravity of the situation. And Maka is being a little bitch. What I wouldn’t give to smack her around a little bit.
Soul Eater 19 has decent action and story architecture. It doesn’t quite elevate the series into something absolutely extraordinary but at least it’s enjoyable in of itself.
