Slayers Revolution Episode 6 Review

August 08th, 2008 Slayers Revolution by Clave

In terms of a direct comparison to the previous season of Slayers Try, Slayers Revolution doesn’t even come close. Out of six or so episodes so far, about 2 and a half have actually had real content.

Slayers Revolution 6 is a gag episode with a few funny moments about balls. You heard me. Balls. There were spiked ones and pocked ones and even a painted one, with the picture of a snake. That’s right. Let your imagination do the rest.

They introduce two new characters in Slayers Revolution 6 that are going to be complete stooges, but will probably never get killed and instead stick around harassing Lina and gang. Sadly, they lack the exaggerated brilliance of the previous stooges in Slayers Try.

In Slayers Revolution 6, Lina and Pokota still don’t get along and beef jerky is the victim.

It’s hard to say precisely what it was about Slayers Try that made it so much better. It may just be the fact that they’re bringing up really old school first season Slayers shit as the “enemy” for Slayers Revolution. I’ve mentioned this before, but it is unlikely that Zanafar armor or the Sword of Light spiel or the bit about Rezo will be the end all of Slayers Revolution baddies, nonetheless they’re a lot more lackluster than Valgaav and Darkstar.

A friend of mine and I shared a discussion regarding who they were actually going to place as the final nemesis in Slayers Revolution when it was first announced and my personal bet, at this point, is another piece of Shabranigdo reviving. I don’t think they’ll follow the manga and grant Gourry the Blast Sword, which is what he eventually gets to replace the original Sword of Light.

I think the problem with Slayers Revolution is the lack of purpose. The opposition between Lina and Pokota is more frivolous than sinister. We know there is Xellos, and the Zanafar armor, and Feather Fan Hag and Maid but their presence as antagonists lack the malice of the enemies in Slayers Next and Slayers Try.

I was also disappointed when Lina didn’t blow up Gongoro village with a Dragon Slave. I was totally expecting it, and it just never happened. An avalanche of balls doesn’t count.
