Slayers Revolution Episode 5 Review
Wow, I mean just wow. Slayers Revolution 5 was really packed with a great deal of plot information. It isn’t too difficult to follow for anyone who has seen the entirety of the Slayers series before, but for anyone who is just picking up Slayers Revolution now, it can be a tad confusing.
In Slayers Revolution 5, they introduce the enemy cast. Given the way Slayers usually shapes out, I highly doubt these will be the final villains. They will likely be part of some greater plot involving one of the more powerful deities in the Slayers universe.
Here’s a brief rundown to explain the general details of the episode:
Xellos is part of the Mazaku (Monster) race that wants to return the world into chaos. As an ally to Lina in the second and third season, it has often been implied that he is on par in combat ability with Lina, if not having slightly more so. Lina probably has more brute force with her spells, but Xellos has the speed. He will probably turn into Lina and gang’s ally once again some time during the season. The “hi-mi-tsu” thing he does is kind of his trademark gesture. Lina bought her demon blood talismans off Xellos in the second season.
Rezo the Red Priest was the first major antagonist that they defeated halfway through Slayers season one. Even in that season, he was portrayed as going around healing random chubs and conducting experiments to cure his blind eyes. His eyeballs apparently were containers sealing in one of the seven parts of the Dark Lord, Ruby Eye Shabranigdo. Rezo resurrected the Dark Lord in his eyes in a vain attempt to cure his blindness. Lina defeated Rezo/Shabranigdo in season one with an incomplete Giga Slave.
Zanafar, as in Gray Tiger Dudes Zanafar armor, was a demon magic beast defeated at the end of season one of Slayers. The beast had been sealed many years ago by one of Gourry’s ancestors using the Sword of Light. In the first season of Slayers, Lina and gang used a magical sword (whose name I cannot recall) along with the original Sword of Light comboed with various spells to kill Zanafar. Zanafar’s one weakness is the Sword of Light.
Hellmaster Phibrizzo appeared as the final protagonist in Slayers Next (season two). He is one of the five primary Demon Lords of Shabranigdo and is hella powerful. His defeat was the only time Lina completed a cast of a full Giga Slave. It is interesting because the second I saw those frozen sick people, I thought of Slayers Next. There is a striking resemblance.
The Claire Bible mentioned at the very end of Slayers Revolution 5 is an artifact of the Water Dragon King’s memories after he “died” in the War of Demon’s Fall a thousand years ago. It basically contains “all known knowledge.” The page the Gray Tiger Dude got was merely a copy. It was the objective of Lina and gang for most of Slayers Next and it was from the Claire Bible that Lina learned the full Giga Slave spell and completed the Ragna Blade.
The Ragna Blade. They don’t outright say it in Slayers Revolution 5, but when Lina says there is only one spell she can use to fight the Zanafar armor, she is referring to the Ragna Blade spell because the Giga Slave is too dangerous.
The Sword of Light. The fate of the Sword of Light, while ultimately the same, took very different paths in the manga and anime. The Sword of Light should have vanished at the end of Slayers Next, but instead they brought it back for Slayers Try (the third season). However, Gourry did surrender his precious heirloom after the defeat of Dark Star Dugradigdo to the Otherworlder who had the other 4 light weapons in the conclusion of Slayers Try. The one Pokota currently uses is a copy.
Being packed with pre-Slayers Revolution references, this episode is really meant for old fans, of which doubtless there are many. I’m slightly disappointed with the fact that they aren’t working harder towards attaining Gourry a sword. He’s too good for that shitty normal metal sword he’s currently using. I really wish they would give us a gander of Filia, but I doubt it’ll happen.
