Nabari no Ou Episode 6 Review

May 17th, 2008 Nabari no Ou by Clave

Nabari no Ou—I believe this will be the first time I have reviewed an episode from this series, so I’ll say this straight off, I really don’t see how anyone can enjoy this. You have one apathetic main character whose greatest charm is the way he plays gay to get what he wants; a boring side character who is the all around good guy that is useful in all the things the main character isn’t; a girl running around claiming to be a samurai, but we all know they needed a chick in the main cast line up and they wanted her to be swinging a sword; then finally there is the teacher/bodyguard who is supposed to be the “strongest” of the bunch that is essentially the primary firepower. This line up actually seems somewhat similar to another show that is wildly popular.

The animation for Nabari no Ou is fairly sub-par considering this is supposed to be an action anime. Half the point is gone if the action isn’t worth watching. The plot, from what I can glean 6 episodes in, is typical action adventure shounen crap. The characters aren’t even that unique, with the exception of Miharu who is good for a couple of laughs.

So far they’ve delved into the common themes of friendship, the value of life, idealism, blah blah blah, the usual drivel; slightly less prominent is the revenge theme. Lo and behold, the Samurai Sword Chick Raimei has an older brother that killed off her clan—this should really remind you of something. And we mustn’t forget the rival, the one that has the One Shot Finger of Doom, Yoite.

Anyways, Nabari no Ou episode 6 starts where episode 5 left off—Miharu is taken by One Shot Finger Doom and the other three stooges are scrambling looking for him. Teacher takes a massive hit to his ego and self-esteem and blames himself, which by the way I agree with. A surprise to no one is a promise made, and amnesia, so Miharu doesn’t even remember with who he made the promise with. A bit is revealed about Yoite and how he thinks of himself, in particular his seemingly mysterious statement regarding his own lifelessness. He explains his finger pointing power and threatens Miharu’s friends with it so he can erase his own existence.

In Nabari no Ou episode 6 I’m finally starting to see all the yaoi gags that are made about this show. It is somewhat apparent in the way Miharu likes to play gay, but it wasn’t nearly as prominent till the moment in the bamboo forest between Yoite and Miharu.
