Code Geass R2 Episode 14 Review

July 13th, 2008 Code Geass R2 by Clave

Code Geass R2 is like the girl you started dating when she was hot, and then gained twenty pounds once you entered the “serious relationship” phase. Code Geass R2 episode 14 killed the series for me in so many different ways that I’m left wondering if next week will provide us with some ghoulish continuum of the series.

Lelouch literally goes on a rampage.

Yes, he was bent over Shirley’s death, but this episode really puts him in the category of whiny spoiled douchebags who cry when they don’t get their way. The fact that he nearly always managed to get his way doesn’t change anything. In season 1, even if Lelouch wasn’t always the “good guy” there was, at least, always the nobility of purpose. He was not “good” or “evil” but he had rules, beliefs to which he adhered that provided the fuel for his conquest. And for that, you could admire him.

In Code Geass R2 episode 14 he loses that. More to the point he is undermining his own authority with his men. WTF were the creators thinking? They just keep piling shit onto this series to make it…I don’t know…a dung heap?

So Rolo did end up killing Shirley. After having an impact in the first two episodes of the second season and then dropping off the map for the next ten or so episodes, Lelouch has finally decided he’s had enough of the little prick. Rolo’s infatuated obsession with his “older brother” has led to a ridiculous tragedy that came out of nowhere. The creators brute forced Shirley’s death in there just to give Lelouch a reason to get rid of one of his most useful pets.

Whatever. More is to come from that direction. With a sword of Damocles hanging over his head, it’s only a matter of time before Rolo has to turn on his “older brother.”

Then there is Suzaku.

I never liked the cocksucker, but the fact that he is willing to stoop to dosing Kallen with Refrain makes me want to take a jackhammer to his nutsack and create a reenactment of the Nutcracker.

And what is with these clothes? We’ve gotten bunny suits, swim wear, porn star dresses, and maid outfits all in one series so far. What the fuck is Kallen wearing?

The fast pace of the anime really doesn’t do certain segments of its story justice. In this single episode, they find the Geass organization, pinpoint it, and annihilate it, after the first hint of it was mentioned two or three episodes ago.

Code Geass R2 has so many threads of conflict in it that it’s actually becoming a bother just to keep track of it all, and they keep adding more. There is still Schneizel and Charles and Bat Shit Crazy Glasses Girl and the Knights of the Round and Cornelia and more. My fucking God, where will it end? I hope they don’t resolve all of them with a few bangs and flashes like they did the Geass Organization.

Code Geass R2 episode 14 pretty much damned the series to the 18th level of hell for me, but there was a slight redeeming feature to this episode: We got a fair bit of C.C. screen time and certain elements of the story were revealed.

I shudder to think of what will happen if they move on to a season 3. They shouldn’t. They really freaking shouldn’t. Just end it already for Christ’s sake so we can move on with our lives.

Contrary to everything you just said, I liked this episode, however I do have on thing to ask. How is it possible for you to put a negative light on so many parts of a single episode? If your writing a review, your really supposed to be neutral (unless your a critic, and critics don’t flame). So go have a nice day Mr. Negative.

    Thanks for the support Bleickz

    but @ sorrowful:

You can like it. You’re perfectly entitled to your own opinion.

I don’t quite know what you mean by neutral, but if you mean the writing format that some other anime blogs do then forget about it. I don’t watch an episode of anime to then relive it through words all over again.

Reviews are opinion posts, there is no way for them to be “neutral”. Any review that is completely neutral is a summary. The entire point of writing a real review, or critique, is to express an opinion. And I really really hated this episode, and henceforth my opinion.

As to flames, did I flame anyone? The creators, perhaps, and the characters in the anime. Do you seriously expect me to hold back over fictional characters? And I highly doubt the creators are reading this.

Believe it or not, I did not hate -everything- about the episode, but it killed a great deal of what I admired about Code Geass in general. It was highly inconsistent with certain traits of the anime.

“He was not “good” or “evil” but he had rules, beliefs to which he adhered that provided the fuel for his conquest. And for that, you could admire him.”

I agree with this completely. That, in my opinion was the unifying theme of the first season. Lelouch started off as a youth, intelligent but still naive about the full implications of his actions. As the season progressed he became more dedicated to his goals, partly out of choice, and partly out of a growing sense of responsibility for his actions.

That is why this episode could be seen as such a departure from the series in general. He threw away all his plans in a bout of passion because of Shirley. I think that the writers could be taking this in a couple of directions; simply re-humanizing Lelouch, or dragging him “down” to become like Suzaku, while Suzaku is becoming more like the old Lelouch, having the ends justify the means.

The pace of this episode left me a little breathless, the rest of this season has been so restive, and then it seemed like they crammed everything that was “supposed” to happen in the last 5 episodes into one.

Still, i’m curious where this is going.

Good review, Clave, though I don’t know if there’s as much reason to worry as you fear.

For Clave who is clueless about the female race, Kallen is wearing a dress =P Also on a completely related note, did Kallen get bigger boobs? Cause DAMMN!
