Slayers Revolution - Anime News Commentary

April 10th, 2008 Anime News by Clave

It has come to my attention, as any anime fan that frequents ANN probably is aware, that Slayers Revolution has been announced. The Slayers anime franchise holds a special place in my heart, although younger or more recent anime fan may not even know what Slayers is. It was over ten years ago after all. Damn this makes me feel old.

Slayers holds a special place in my heart not because it is a particularly good series, in either art, animation, or plot, but because it is the anime series that broke me in. I never had much interest in anime up to the point I saw Slayers. More specifically, I saw the last five episodes of Slayers Try before anything else and got so hooked I had to see the rest of the series. This is also related to why I dislike Trigun, but that is a story for another time.

My glee at Slayers Revolution being produced aside, I had trepidations about who would be chosen to be the voice actress for Lina Inverse. I did not fully appreciate Megumi Hayashibara, who voiced the red haired, demon thumping, trigger-happy sorceress. I was under the impression she was in retirement. Upon watching the series again recently, as well as Saber Marionette J where Megumi voiced Lime, I realized just how utterly irreplaceable she was. If you have never seen either of these series before, I would suggest you go and take a look, or lend an ear, to these two characters. I realize she has done many other gigs before, but the voicing for Lina and Lime require a special touch that I find difficult to believe can be easily replaced.

I cannot express how relieved I am that Megumi will be the one to voice Lina again. If for no other reason, I will watch Slayers Revolution just to hear Lina’s erratic outbursts, legendary temper, and insatiable hunger—it will be worth it, with the original voice.
