Vampire Knight Episode 3 Review
I did not bother reviewing the first two episodes of Vampire Knight because they were boring. It was just the usual setup of an anime drama series. Finally, something happens in this show other than crowds of girls swooning over the vampire dudes, Zero shaking like an addict without his fix, and Yuuki running around showing some leg. Vampire Knight episode 3 finally starts giving this anime some depth and color as well as moving right along into what will likely be the first major conflict of the story.
Yuuki’s naiveté is rather brutally dispelled as she comes face to face with lower level vampires that are ruled by their baser instincts. She gets a second blow when Zero takes a nice bite out of her facing her with the reality of what she just learned to be disgusted with. Generally speaking, I dislike idealists, naïfs, and stubbornly oblivious characters. Yuuki certainly fits some of the above, but I don’t really dislike her. Everything about her makes some kind of rational sense. As boring as the first two episodes of Vampire Knight were for me, they did a reasonable job of setting up Yuuki as a character, at the very least.
A couple of things get revealed in a timely manner in Vampire Knight episode 3. They give slightly more background on Kaien, the schoolmaster, and they introduce differences in vampires. Of course, if you bothered using wikipedia or read the manga, you would know all this anyways.
I rather like Zero as a character. He has a pair. Right now I’m debating if I want to see him killed by Yuuki, Kaname, or himself. I would say Yuuki just because I don’t think she has what it takes to do it. Kaname dealing out death to Zero would be expected, although Zero committing suicide wouldn’t really surprise me either.
The best thing I have to say about Vampire Knight as an anime so far is the pacing. It really seems like nothing is too rushed and nothing feels too slow. Episode 3 manages to raise the tension and build some momentum for the series nicely and I finally feel like this show is worth continuing.
