Soul Eater Episode 3 Review
I was disappointed when Death, the Kid busted out twin pistols in Soul Eater episode 3. I knew he was going to use guns after watching the end of episode 2, but it just feels counter to the grain of the anime. The idea is that they are reapers of Kishin larva souls, or something to that effect. He should at least use some kind of scythe, like gunscythes, perhaps.
I’m sure Death’s obsession with perfect symmetry will become meaningless gags played over and over again throughout Soul Eater. To be quite honest, I didn’t find it to be that funny. The part where he grabbed their boobs complaining about the difference in size was probably the highlight of the entire episode. I prefer Black Star’s outrageous and idiotic self-idolization to Death’s overkill symmetry obsession.
His Thompson sister pistols, the Demon Twin Pistols, seems kind of overpowered. They can basically use themselves. So why bother with Death, the Kid at all? They could probably make better progress in becoming super weapons as they proved in Soul Eater episode 3. This brings me back to the point about the guns. So they become kind of demonic flak cannon after taking 100 souls apiece? That is cool I guess. I could use one.
The animation doesn’t seem to have a particularly high frame rate, but they compensate for this by emphasizing the movements—the critical moments of movements—and create a rather interesting visual effect. I’ve been watching like a hawk trying to determine if Soul Eater episode 3 has been lacking in the visuals and so far I’m pleased that it hasn’t degenerated too much since the first episode.
As I said, I found this episode to be rather dull. I still believe Soul Eater as an anime has a great deal of entertainment potential though. Thankfully, it is blatantly obvious that these last three episodes were only the introduction. I’m looking forward to episode 4.
